Scare or Prepare?

   Scare or Prepare?

RE: Text Message to Parents (01.03.19)

Some of you may be aware of one of the most recent latest online crazes called the ‘momo challenge’; information about it can be found in the link below.

In order to minimise concern and/or panic, we have decided not to publish information in our Online Safety Newsletter or via a letter sent home with the children. This approach risks drawing unnecessary attention to the ‘challenge’ and sparking an unhealthy interest in something many of our children may be unaware of.

Advice from the London Grid for Learning - LGfL (see below) suggests that sending out warnings or mentioning a name in newsletters is not always helpful. ‘Scare or Prepare?’ is a helpful question to ask yourself, with education and preparation always being useful in doing what we can to keep our children safe online. Continue to have open and general conversations with your children about the kind of content they might encounter online, and ensure they know where to go/who to turn to if they come across something unsettling.
