P2 SPELLINGS
In the PEAR group I have made two spellings lists – PEARS 1 – is slightly more challenging. You will be able to judge which spelling list best suits your child. Also it is important to keep practicing those little CVC words as the medial sounds can be tricky so it would do no harm to practice the APPLES list if you wish.
Suggested Weekly Phonic Activities:
Monday: highlight the sound, i.e. moon, few, do etc. from your list of spellings.
Word sort – cut out from a list of words and sort into their spelling groups, i.e. moon, pool, too and flew, dew, new
Tuesday: word building – use your spellings to ‘build’ words using paper squares. Cut out small square pieces of paper. Call out a spelling/word for your child to ‘sound out’ and spell. Write each ‘sound’ on a paper square and blend together, i.e. m – oo - n (moon) and h – a – t (hat), would be written on 3 pieces of paper, th – i – n - k (think) and s – a – n - d (sand) would be written on 4 pieces of paper.
Wednesday: Sound/word search – use a scaffolded text to search for and highlight the target sound in the words each week. An adult may read the text to the child and the child is to ‘listen for’ and ‘say’ the target sound every time they hear it in a word, i.e. if the sound for the week is ‘oo’ and the sentence is ‘There was a big moon in the sky’ then the child should say ‘oo’ after the word ‘moon’ is read out. In class we sometimes close our eyes so we can really concentrate on listening for the sound.
Thursday: Dictation – you can use your child’s spellings each week to make into a sentence. Call the sentence out slowly several times for your child to write down. Remember capital letters, finger spacing and full stops.
Friday: Spelling test – you may continue with a Friday test. Remember you deserve a little treat for all your hard work! Especially if you get them all correct!!
